Think of it this way: a annual membership is really just a 'service for 12 months'; and so if we simply create a 'Resource' as the tier-name of a membership, for example 'VIP', with a primary tag as 'membership', and secondary tag 'vip', we could build up a 'booking flow' that sells membership 24/7, also visualizing all of your members in the matrix showing you their 'membership term'.
